What is it?
Nicotine replacement therapy is an alternative route of administration for nicotine to get into your system other than through the smoke in a cigarette. Some of the options available for smoking cessation are:
- Nicotine Patches
- Nicotine Gum
- Nicotine Inhalers
- Nasal Sprays
Well depending on the type of therapy you choose they all work a little differently. The nicotine gum for example is used when you feel an urge for a cigarette coming on. The patches on the other hand are put on each day and are time released meaning that the nicotine is given all day long. Most of these options are also available in multiple strengths which are designed to give a person just enough nicotine to make it without smoking. It is best to discuss with your Doctor what might work best for you.
How long do you use them?
Each person is different. Keep in mind that the longer you use a nicotine replacement method, the longer you are putting off the effects of withdrawal from nicotine. Many people find success in using one of these therapies along with a medication. Patches come in 3 different “steps” meaning that it is a method of quitting that involves weaning off the nicotine. Gum on the other hand is designed so once you pick a strength you are supposed to stick with that same strength right through to the end.
Is one type better than another?
No. Again each person is different and in many cases it can come down to what is most convenient for you and your lifestyle. You should do research on each type of nicotine system, and figure out what you think will work best for you before you make your decision. Again it is important to discuss your plan with you Doctor as many of these can have side effects and some of them can be made worse by medical conditions.
